Are septum piercings gay

Why the loss of septum piercings as a queer femme signifier takes away our safety

There comes a time in the lives of many queer people when they wish to be confident enough to approach potential romantic partners in public. For queer femmes who are attracted to other femmes, this can be significantly challenging due to difficulties with outwardly expressing queer identity.

Heteronormativity creates a nature where everyone is straight until assumed otherwise.

This means feminine presenting people are often perceived as straight, and this can be frustrating when they want to romantically approach another femme, build a people of other lgbtq+ people, or simply express a key part of their identity.

Many femmes leave through the journey of attempting to ‘butch themselves up’ by trying a more masculine presenting wardrobe in an attempt to be outwardly queer and lean into stereotypes. But this tends to be futile due to the age-old desire of just wanting to be yourself.

Being femme isn’t about holding traditional values or conforming to stereotypes, it’s embracing the freedom to show yourself however you choose.

Yet, on Tiktok, there’s a wholeseries

Piercings in Queer Culture

Piercings have been well-liked in queer cultures for longer than I have been alive, and hold been an crucial part of my life for about as long as I have acknowledged I am gay. As soon as I started interacting with other gender non-conforming people in my life more and became a part of the collective, I noticed that piercings were very common to watch in queer groups and loved them at first sight. The freedom to express oneself in whatever way makes you feel most comfortable in your own body is something that I heavily appreciate the existence of, and that is what I see piercings doing for people.

Gender affirmation is a big reason piercings intertwine with lgbtq+ culture, which will generally be most noticeable in non-binary communities, but can apply to cisgender individuals as successfully. For cis women, a pair of nipple piercings or a clitoral hood piercing might create her feel joined to her womanhood, and give her another way to express an appreciation for the body she has.
