Gay xmas movies
Last week, Queerty posted an article proclaiming, “The Hallmark Channel is gayer than ever this year!” This is followed by a huge list of exactly THREE movies that they consider same-sex attracted. The first one, Catch Me If You Claus stars Luke Macfarlane in his 16th film for the network. Yes, the Bros co-star is lgbtq+ in real experience, but the personality in the movie is not. Kudos to him for continuing to be cast in linear roles, but… accomplish we then calculate this as a gay film?
The second movie on their list, Christmas on Cherry Lane is an ensemble piece that includes a gay couple. Jonathan Bennett, Hallmark’s go-to gay actor for gay roles plays opposite Vincent Rodriguez III. It airs December 9th.
The third film, Friends and Family Christmas centers on lesbian friends (Humberly Gonzalez & Ali Liebert) who must pose as a couple for the holidays… and you’ll never surmise what happens! This one premieres on December 17th.
So there you have it. As a reminder: The Hallmark Channel is premiering 42 – FORTY-TWO – new Hallmark Christmas movies this season. And we’re supposed to kvell because TWO of them are gay-ish? Honey, please.
Since 2020, a few of these gay disposab

This list was originally published on December 9, 2021. It has been updated to include the latest movies in the growing queer Christmas-movie canon.
Not too long ago, LGBTQ+ people who wanted to see themselves represented in holiday movies could either (a) fictional or (b) settle for a second-rate film with a lgbtq+ character who had very not many lines, ambition, or development.
Early in the contemporary queer holiday canon, 2005’s The Family Stone, which stars gay icon Sarah Jessica Parker as a (shocker) snobby New Yorker spending the holidays at her boyfriend’s family house, became a queer hit for its B-plot gay couple with ambitions to adopt a toddler. And while the film is still worth an annual view, so much more has happened in seasonal cinema since SJP’s iconic spilled-strata scene with matriarch Diane Keaton. That is, male lover and lesbian Christmas movies actually center queer people now — same-sex holiday revelers crush and fall in love, break up, regain romance, and just reside the same celebratory December
Lesbian Christmas movies: the final frontier. In a Christmas Feature landscape dominated by heterosexual workaholic girl-bosses returning to their hometowns in authority suits and falling for heterosexual males who do artisan/manual labor, for many years nary a lesbian or pansexual woman, let alone a non-binary person, dared to construct an appearance. It’s usually been unyielding to find any LGBTQ+ Christmas movies at all, but in recent years gay men include been emerging out of the corners into the Christmas spotlight in droves and also, occasionally, a wee womxn loving womxn, queer or gender non-conforming woman or a non-binary person has earned a rare minutes under the mistletoe. In 2020, Clea Duvall’s Happiest Seasonstarring Kristen Stewart broke records for Hulu, and subsequent years have even brought some homosexual stories from Lifetime (Under the Christmas Tree, 2021) and Hallmark (Friends & Family Christmas, 2023). Although we’ve rarely found ourselves in the mainstream Christmas movie spotlight, we have shown up as side characters and in indie films here and there, and in this genre it seems we’ll grab what we can get!
