Mattea Roach made a identify for herself in the Jeopardy! history books, breaking into the Top 10 highest earners with the $560,983 she won in her 23-game streak. “Jeopardy,” the formerly staid doyen of TV game shows, is in the midst of a queer renaissance — one Canadian hall-of-famer Mattea Roach is proud to be part of.
She hasn’t made a large thing out of her sexuality, but nor is it a secret. Her Twitter bio, which reads “lesbian, Nova Scotian, 19x Jeopardy champ,” was deliberately crafted to satisfy viewers’ curiosity because she figured people might wonder.
Still, when an American news network tweeted about the “lesbian tutor’s” impressive run — which currently gives her the sixth longest streak in the show’s history — people were up in arms, saying her sexuality has little to do with her success.
Roach, for her part, wasn’t so concerned.
“I think it is relevant to my ‘Jeopardy!’ dash , not because it has anything to do with my ability to engage the game but because I consider it’s part of a larger story regarding queer and trans contestants on this season,” the 23-year-old Toronto resident said in an interview ahead of Friday’s episode.

But it’s also become the season of LGBTQ Jeopardy! champions. First off was Amy Schnieder, who became the highest-earning female contestant in Jeopardy! history. Now, a new champion has entered the race to potentially get the top winner this season: a 23-year-old from Canada named Mattea Roach. Mattea is openly a lesbian and even says so on her Twitter profile. So far she’s won 14 games and has amassed $320,081 in winnings.

According to NBC News, Mattea Roch was quoted as saying, “This has been such a crazy season of streaks. I was fully thinking, you know, Amy might still be here. If it’s not Amy, there’s going to be some other super champion that’s just going to knock me out game one. And then, I guess what I didn’t comprehend is maybe I could change into the super champion I wanted to see in the world.”
